What Are the Different Termination Kits for Cables?

At the end of the cables where a conductor stops, there are several safety concerns. This happens because of the lack of insulation, strain at joints, and corrosive conditions. The performance of the cable not only depends on the purity of the conductor, resistance, and insulation, but also on how it is finished at the ends. When there is moisture entry, stress concentration, or insulation breakdown at the end of the cable, the conduction eventually stops, and the whole system fails. This is where TerminationKits for Cables come into play. These kits are the solution for the lack of electrical insulation at the ends, mechanical strength, and sealing from environmental stressors.

Types of Termination Kits for Cables

There are mainly 3 types of termination kits for cables. These are required as per different operating conditions, voltage levels, and installation environments, which require different types of termination solutions.

Heat Shrinkable Termination Kits

Heat Shrinkable termination for cables is the type of termination kit that uses a heat-sensitive material that shrinks onto the ends and seals the joint or terminals. The material of the tube can be polyolefin, silicon rubber, or nylon. These have excellent dielectric strength and mechanical strength. Many of them have flame-retardant properties as well. They are anti-tracking and temperature-resistant as well. The heat-shrinkable termination kits for cables contain heat shrink tubes for insulation, anti-tracking, breakout; connectors/ferrules, and mastic and tape for stress control. A heat gun is used to apply heat to the tubes evenly, and this whole operation is performed by the experts.

Cold Shrinkable Termination Kits

The cold shrinkable termination kits for cables are the ones that don’t need any heat source to create a termination. It basically contains a pre-expanded tube that retains its form when the plastic core is removed. It gets into its original size and wraps around the cable. The tube has elastomeric properties due to which it remains in its form for many years under harsh environmental conditions. The shrinkable material of the sleeve/tube is silicone or EPDM rubber. The kit contains an elastomeric sleeve, an inner plastic core, stress control cones, sealing components, grounding connections, and a lug. This type of termination is applicable in confined spaces, underground installations, and live substation environments where open flames or heating tools are restricted.

Pre-Moulded Termination Kits

The pre-moulded termination kits are engineered in the factory to reduce the on-site assembly and minimize the errors in installation. These are reliable insulated ends for the power cables in various high and low voltage applications. These kits are designed to fit with the specific cable sizes and voltage classes. They have a compact design, which makes them suitable for limited spaces.

Conclusion

To select the right termination kits for cables, consider the cable type, conductor size, insulation material, voltage rating, and installation environment. A well-designed kit is durable, easy to install by the experts, minimize maintenance work and ensures electrical continuity. These are not just an accessory but an integral part of the overall electrical network.
